Salt Lake Art Museum Opens on Pioneer Day, Celebrating Utah's Rich Artistic Legacy

Utah's first museum dedicated exclusively to Utah artists opens July 24, marking a new chapter in the state's cultural history.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Salt Lake Art Museum will celebrate its Grand Opening on Thursday, July 24 (Pioneer Day), at ___ p.m., welcoming the public to Utah's first museum dedicated entirely to Utah artists and marking a new chapter in the state's cultural history.

The Salt Lake Art Museum (SLAM) will officially open its doors on Thursday, July 24 (Pioneer Day), becoming Utah's first museum dedicated entirely to Utah art and artists. The grand opening marks the first new art museum to open in Salt Lake City in more than 40 years and establishes a permanent home for the state's remarkable artistic legacy.

While Utah is internationally recognized for its mountains, deserts, and national parks, it has quietly produced generations of acclaimed painters, sculptors, photographers, illustrators, and contemporary artists. The Salt Lake Art Museum was created to celebrate that legacy while inspiring future generations of artists and art lovers.

"Utah has long been known for its extraordinary landscapes, but those same landscapes have inspired generations of extraordinary artists," said Dr. Micah Christensen, founder of the Salt Lake Art Museum. "For decades, Utah artists have shared their work with the world without having a museum dedicated entirely to telling their story. The Salt Lake Art Museum finally gives Utah's artists the permanent home they deserve and creates a place where everyone can experience the creativity that has always been part of this state's identity."

Located in the beautifully restored historic B'nai Israel Temple, one of Utah's oldest religious buildings, the museum represents the thoughtful preservation of an important landmark while creating one of Salt Lake City's newest cultural destinations.

Opening exhibitions will showcase the depth and diversity of Utah art, including the highly anticipated Julia Reagan exhibition, offering visitors an opportunity to experience some of the artists who continue to shape Utah's creative landscape.

Throughout opening week, museum leadership will be available for interviews about the significance of Utah's first museum dedicated exclusively to Utah artists, the vision that brought the Salt Lake Art Museum to life, the adaptive reuse of the historic Temple B'nai Israel building, Utah's long and influential artistic tradition, and the museum's opening exhibitions.

Executive Director Chris Jensen believes the museum will help elevate Utah's artists while strengthening the state's cultural identity.

"Utah's artists have enriched our communities, preserved our history, and helped tell the story of who we are for generations," Jensen said. "The Salt Lake Art Museum is more than a building filled with artwork. It's a place where Utah's creative spirit is celebrated, shared, and passed on. We couldn't imagine a better day to open than Pioneer Day, when we honor not only those who built this state, but also the artists who continue to define it."

The museum will celebrate its grand opening free to the public, with special exhibitions, community activities, and opportunities for visitors to experience Utah art in a new and inspiring way.

The Salt Lake Art Museum invites the public, visitors, artists, and community members from across the state to join in celebrating this historic milestone.
