Albert Bierstadt In Utah
Albert Bierstadt in Utah
JULY 24, 2026 - SEPTEMBER 19, 2026
Albert Bierstadt in Utah showcases newly identified works by Albert Bierstadt made during his expeditions through Utah between 1863 and 1881. Bierstadt is perhaps the most admired painter of the American West, and his paintings of California are displayed in institutions including the Metropolitan Museum, Getty, and US Capitol. Few know that Bierstadt also painted extensively in Utah. Over three decades of visits, Bierstadt came to know the Wasatch better than any other Western artist of his time. His journeys through this territory coincided with the westward expansion of migrants across the continent, the development of the transcontinental railroad, and a period of transformative social, political, and economic change within Utah. These paintings, more intimate and loosely painted than many of the large works exhibited in his lifetime, emphasize Bierstadt's personal experience with and love for the Utah landscape. Informed by new research, this exhibition reveals Utah's important role in shaping one of America's most influential artists.
