Under Western Skies: The Halladay Collection

A serious collector is not defined by the monetary worth of the collection. More often, collectors are devoted students who, through years of ardent pursuit, become the foremost connoisseurs and scholars of their subjects. Whether composed of oil paintings, bottle caps, baseball cards, or ancient coins, a collection is both the product of great effort over time and a self-portrait of the people who passionately gathered it. 

Through years of effort, passion, and careful connoisseurship, the Halladays created an unmatched collection of early Western painting, photography, and sculpture. The works displayed here are only a sample of their expansive collection. Over several decades, Chris and Reed Halladay acquired seminal works by artists such as Granville Redmond (1871-1935), Edgar Payne (1883-1947), William Wendt (1865-1946), Clarence Hinkle (1880-1960), Frank Tenney Johnson (1874-1939), and Charles Reiffel (1862-1942). 

In 2002 the Halladays became co-founders of the Pasadena Museum of California Art with fellow collectors Robert and Arlene Oltman. Reed served as the Board President. For sixteen years, Reed and Chris planned and sponsored dozens of shows, often in collaboration with major institutions such as Brigham Young University, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the California Institute of the Arts. They have lent works to institutions including the Haggin Museum, the Springville Museum of Art, the Church History Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, and The Irvine Museum.
